ASIP – Secret Thirteen Mix 55

I have compiled a mix for the ever brilliant Secret Thirteen Music Journal, which now sits alongside legends such as 36, Loscil and even Biosphere, to name just a few contributors. I won’t write too much of an introduction as Justinas from S13 captures a perfect intro below. But what I will say, is that it features three exclusives Places Series tracks, so make sure you keep an ear out for these – as they are pretty special. And of course, there are also some other amazing tracks and label inclusions that are close to my heart. I have included links to download or read more on each track where possible.

A big thank-you to everyone who has supported the mix so far and of course everyone at S13 for the opportunity to participate.

“Secret Thirteen Mix 055” is a smoothly polished ethereal music compilation which fuses 16 original records from such prominent musicians as Aphex Twin, Ametsub, Herrmann & Kleine, Ian Hawgood, Sam KDC and other relevant talents. Mix also contains exclusive works forthcoming on author’s record label later this year.

The author of the mix is Ryan Griffin, a British journalist, DJ and label owner, now residing in Portland, Oregon (USA). Started to spin turntables while he was only 16 years old, Griffin gradually matured his musical taste which varies among house, techno, ambient and other electronic music styles. His time spent in Ibiza was the main influence to explore more atmospheric downtempo music. Fascinated by the early Global Underground releases and works of such notable musicians as Nick Warren and Ulrich Schnauss, Griffin was involved into the music industry more and more. In 2004 he started working at Crosstown Rebels (record label), but it wasn’t lasting for so long. Soon after he has left operator’s job at the record label, Griffin created his own influential and continuous project called A Strangely Isolated Place, mainly focusing on the honorable musician’s exclusive mixes, records releasing/publishing and promoting creations by other skillful artists. By constantly developing his conceptual music community and label, Griffin has presented a fruitful catalog of works from such respectable musicians as Loscil, Anders Ilar, Kettel, 36 and many others. Also don’t forget to check his The Places Series presenting some high-quality releases by very promising artists from all around the globe.

“Secret Thirteen Mix 055” is an entirely frank and subtly manoeuvrable audio voyage which mirrors Griffin’s inner peace and his mellow musical taste. The selection contains lots of relatively new stuff from very promising artists such as EUS, Module, Kiyoko and others. This mix also clearly reflects a musical concept of ASIP. The basis of this mix stands on the stylistically diverse and refined employment of digitalized instrumentation, arrangements of amazing extensive melodies and shifting ambiance that constantly vary between upper and lower background layers. Often emerging skillfully shaped architectural rhythmics enrich the whole meditative background with mobility and flexibility. With a precise intention and coordination of sound that balances between ambient and smooth bass music, Griffin perfectly maintains and holds the specific mysticism and atmosphere of the recordings. Sonorous authentic musical effects, sublime experimental atmospheres and creative fuzzy loops strengthen the wholeness with the micro-activity and vivid emotions. Cathedral type sounding of high-quality records brings a rich listening experience and every time lets us find something new and yet unnoticed.

‘Secret Thirteen Mix 055′ is like a symbolic and expressive Edvard Munch’s modern art painting “De ensomme” where two hazy figures that are going through the the nebulous landscape create a strange mood of love, dreams, magnificent thoughts, life meaningfulness and a weird coincidences”.

ASIP - The isolated 2000

Just under three months after asking everyone on the ASIP Facebook page for their tracks of choice, The isolated 2000 is finally here. Yes, it took a while, but you know the saying…

For those that are new to this mix theme (and for those who missed the first one – The isolated 1000), this is a selection of tracks chosen by members of the ASIP Facebook page (the first 2000 to be exact). The ask was easy – choose a track which you have discovered or come to love because of an artist or mix featured on ASIP.

The result… a track list featuring some of the best music of recent times and dare I say it, all time. Music ranged from horizontal ambient, to classic techno and most of my favourite artists were thrown into consideration, along with more recent artists which are undoubtedly flying the future classic flag.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get every track submitted into the mix (18 out of 28 isn’t bad right?!) and this was the very reason for the mix taking so long – I’ve been doing my best to make them all work together and get everyone’s selections in. But, I had to keep some kind of structure and I hope you all enjoy where I ended up. After all, it would’ve been over two hours long if I got them all in there!

Additional to deciding the track list, I also asked for contributions for the artwork. Needless to say, the response was amazing and the images were just as epic. You all had your say on the Facebook page, by ‘liking’ your favourite, but one had to be chosen as the lead image, and George Potter gets the crowning glory for his simple yet blissful image of Lake Michigan – no doubt a contender for his very own strangely isolated place. Not only did George’s image get a bunch of ‘Likes’ on the Facebook page, but George is without fail one of the most active contributors on the page – a worthy winner in my books.  All of the submissions are available to view below (and embedded within the track ID3 tags), so a big thank you to everyone who submitted both artwork and track suggestions – I just wish there was a way to use them all.
