Dominik Eulberg – Diorama

As some of you know, I’m a big fan of Dominik Eulberg. More so now than ever before, after he’s just followed up on his last album, ‘Heimische Gefilde’ with a superb release on Traum.

Der Buchdrucker‘ was the stand out track from Heimische Gefilde and epitomised Dominik’s ability to stay in a land of his own – a land rooted in techno but with the utmost desire to mold into melodic electronica. That’s probably not the right thing to say, as Dominik really isn’t trying to be or do anything – his music is probably some of the most unique and unparalleled music I know, and it’s good to see that it’s stayed that way with ‘Diorama’.

After a spell away from Traum, Dominik has returned to the same label which helped him launch his first album, ‘Flora and Fauna’ and the evergreen theme has remained. “The eleven greatest wonders of nature” make up the titles for Diorama and just like mother-nature herself, the album is complex, unpredictable and simply beautiful in many different, constantly changing guises.

This is a walk in Dominik’s most treasured and cultivated garden. From the early sunrise of ‘Taeuschungs-Blume’s’ downtempo beats, to the complex awakening of the Aphex Twin-like ‘Echomaus’, a cloud-breaking, pulsating synth from Das Neunauge and tiny water droplet formations on ‘Die 3 Millonen Musketiere’, Dominik manages to take complex structures, expansive melody progressions and a plethora of instruments, push them to their limits and create dance-floor destroying tracks which sit just as comfortably on a pair of quality headphones. Only with your ears swamped in Diorama can you appreciate the diversity in tracks and detail in every production.

It’s good to have Dominik back on one of my favourite labels, Traum and even better to see him stick to his guns and do it the way only he knows.

Here’s my three favourites from the album. Taeuschungs-Blume is the most ‘downtempo’ taking from the album, so if you like your techno, check out the rest – there’s a whole day spent exploring Dominik’s techno garden after these… CD/MP3/Vinyl available at Boomkat.
