The sign of a good mix… when you spend just as much time digging for the artists featured than actually listening to it. That’s exactly what Pete Srdic and I have done via the ASIP Facebook page, coming up trumps with a Catalonian electronica musician called Monoceros, who was recently featured on Solar Fields’ isolatedmix.
Monoceros is Joan Malé, a veteran producer with over ten years of releases on Expanding Records, Sutemos, Cocoon and now his own label, Nonexistent Records. Joan’s work is still described as ‘in evolution’ but you can expect some very detailed and organic textures, IDM style electronics and lush ambient pads.
‘Happiness’, begins with gentle, timid bells and slowly becomes entangled in swirling waves of synths and glitchy electronics. And ‘Little Pieces’ – a haunting ambient background that would be suited to any beat-less ambienteer, until a light shower of breaks, each the size of a pin-hole begin to puncture the calming, evolving melody – my two favourites so far.
These tracks are taken from ‘Tales From Silent Nights’, which is available free along with many other of Monoceros’ releases. 2010 saw the release of Joan’s latest album ‘A Glorious Afternoon’ which I’m just about to start on after reading some great reviews. Then I’ll make an attack on the rest of his label…

It’s fascinating Ryan, how a new discovery can branch out and then branch out again & keep going. The reward truly is to those who are inquisitive and dig around once they find something that piques their interest. Music. It rocks !
