Many of you will know Thomas Fehlmann by now. Long time player for The Orb and undoubtedly, a pioneer within his field. It wasn’t until I saw him play live last month alongside Lusine that I realised just how respected he is amongst his fans and those lucky enough to stumble across the grandfather of Kompakt for the very first time.
Peering eloquently over his Macbook, on a makeshift table next to the main booth, his set began and ended with a big fat Fehlmann grin. Starting with tracks from his latest album, Gute Luft, Fehlmann took his squelchy melodic techno into acid, then deep techno. He would’ve been the highlight, had he not been followed effortlessly by a Lusine live set. Hard to choose between the two – both unique and excellent in their own right. My first trip to Berlin was complete and had been graced by the best of electronic music’s old and new.
Unfortunately I cant find any recent Fehlmann live sets, but, Fehlmann’s Live set from Mutek 2009 is a good start. (download) There is also a Fehlmann DJ set RA podcast, archived from the main site, but available here.
On to what Fehlmann does best and the main reason for this post – Fehlmann’s ambient set for Plasmodium Radio. Despite the seemingly incomplete tracklisting, the mix doesn’t deserve to be sat on any digital shelf gathering dust. Released December last year, Plasmodium have recently updated their site and made all previous mixes available once again. It may have slipped by some of you, so grab it now:
