…and an eleven hour flight back from South Africa.
Six weeks away has meant i haven’t been publishing as much as I had liked on the blog. With slow internet speeds, I had to be selective about what was downloaded whilst out there. Ironically enough, a three hour set by About Face Musik, called ‘a half eaten biscuit – whispers, dandelions and damp slippers’ miraculously found its way on to my iPod and probably broke the record for South Africa’s longest ever download.
About Face is Ben Kelly, a DJ from Maidstone (UK). DJ’ing since 2005. With several successful releases and recognition from the BBC’s ‘introducing’ programme, it wasn’t until 2008 that Ben’s more melodic and experimental side was explored under the pseudonym About Face.
Depth of track selection, seamless mixing and an impeccable patience, the journey is three hour ‘live sound-piece, spanning through from electronica, dub, 2-step, deep house, idm, dnb and all things quirky inbetween, sewn together with live percussion, keys and samples’. There are tracks featured you will recognise, tracks that surprise, and tracks that you don’t even know you are listening to – they sit embedded and balanced amongst a wealth of great music that comfortably rumbles along. Before you know it, you’ve listened to the set three times. A Johannesburg skyline, is now a blanket of cloud, quickly transformed into a green quilt dotted with lakes, houses and…oh there’s the M25. Heathrow touchdown.
Don’t just click play. Take the time to download, take it with you, pack it in your suitcase and give it the three hours of solid listening it deserves.
