It’s very rare that i can put together a mix/compilation and stick with what was originally planned. With so many great tracks in 2010 already, I was aiming to compile some of my favourite so far. But instead, ended up with a mixture of old and new in what turned out to be a ‘beat’ orientated style.
I think a few of you may enjoy it, so here we go. It’s certainly not ambient, but there are several calmer melodic moments to ensure it doesn’t stray too far from the dowtempo comfort zone.
ASIP – Brimming with beats by astrangelyisolatedplace
01. Hybrid – Swimming (Inperspective)
Taken from Hybrid’s ‘Scores’ as posted by sPaces Cinematic Sessions a few weeks ago.
02. Paneye – Chasing Ghost Trees
One of Secret Stations sterling releases available to download. This track reminds me of Bibio’s Ambivalence Avenue.
03. Bonobo – Eyes Down
I only got hold of this album a few weeks ago, so it’s still fresh listening for me. One of the three tracks from the album to feature the beautiful vocals of Andreya Triana.
04. Aim – Flight 602
Bonobo’s album reminded me of Aim’s productions, so i thought it would be nice to follow with one of their tracks. This – the title track from the album Flight 602.
05. Boards of Canada – Dave (I’m a real traditionalist)
‘A Few Old Tunes vol 2′ is one of my favourite early BOC albums , purely for the randomness of the samples. This track is no exception.
06. Cassius – Interlude
Taken from ’1999′, this track was used more as a sample within the mix for the droplet sound. Don’t worry, it’s not a full on French house track.
07. Jel – All Day Breakfast
Loud, clashing, distorted drums, followed by a beautiful piano.
08. Amorph – Far Away
One of the ‘new’ tracks, that Intelligent Toys nicely presented us for download last week. my favourite from the 3xCD release.
09. Pantha Du Prince – Lay In A Shimmer
It was ‘Saturn Strobe’ that started my love for PDP and ‘Black Noise’ will be a classic in years to come.
10. Manual – Warm Circuits
The opening track for Manual’s latest album only gets a fleeting mention within this mix, as an intro to Lusine. If you haven’t already, get hold of ‘Drowned in Light’ – its Manual at his best.
11. Lusine – Haze
A friend of work recently sent me an awesome Lusine live Mutek mix which has kept me occupied all week, and this track genuinely blows me away. A perfect example of Lusine’s immense production skills.
12. Snap – Rhythm is a Dancer (Mux Mool edit)
I’m not afraid to admit it, I love the original. Unfortunately though, it wouldn’t quite fit here, so Mux Mool provides the rework.
13. Cualquiera – Que no Abuela
I found Cualquiera a few years ago. Not sure where or how unfortunately. Taken from a nice little album titled ‘Pudo Hacerio’.
14. Freescha – Moving
I love the structure and progression of this track. A beautiful melody and some awesome drum programming towards the end.
15. Caribou – Hannibal
A standout from one of the best albums of the year so far. I saw Caribou live a few weeks ago and this track was unbelievable loud.
16. Millimetrik – Meduse
I was going to include one of Millimetrik’s tracks from the collaboration with port-royal but this particular one fit the style of the mix. Taken from Fugues Unreleased Tracks 2009.
17. Aphex Twin – Cliffs (1043 remix)
One of several Wisp remixes of classic Aphex Twin ambient tracks. Every-one as good as the other.
I hope you enjoy it.
