I’m always happy to see artists mixing genres they are not normally known for. It can give you a unique insight into the artists influences and aspirations, which have often shaped their productions in one way or another. Take Donnacha Costello’s genre defining melodic techno and my favourite production ‘Orange’ (below) – he was always going to be an ambient fan.
1. Burial – Night Bus [Hyperdub]
2. Aphex Twin – Rhubarb [Warp Records]
3. Shuttle 358 – Frame [12k]
4. Donnacha Costello – That Empty Feeling [Mille Plateaux]
5. Keith Fullerton Whitman – Stereo Music for Yamaha Disklavier [Kranky]
6. Sylvain Chauveau – Le brasier de tristesse [Les Disques Du Soleil Et De L'Acier]
7. Taylor Deupree -Northern [12k]
8. ISAN – Ship [Morr Music]
9. Icebreaker International & Manual – A Turning [Handshake]
10. F.U.S.E. – Into The Space [Plus 8 Records]
11. Donnacha Costello – Dry Retch [Mille Plateaux]
12. Rachel’s – Water From The Same Source [Quarterstick Records]

Big thanks to Pete Srdic for pointing out the mix. As mentioned above, here’s my favourite Donnacha Costello track, and one i have used on just about every techno influenced mix I’ve ever recorded.

actually donnacha is well known in regards to ambient – his 2001 release ‘together is the new alone’ is rightly considered one of the best releases (ambient or otherwise) of the last decade. essential, if you haven’t heard it.
